How should I price my products?
Your prices are entirely yours to set. Nobody at Cakesify will tell you what to charge. What we will say is that most new sellers price too low, and almost always because they forget to count something.
Count all of it
- Ingredients, at what you actually paid, not what you wish they cost
- Your time. The hours in the kitchen are the business, not a hobby you do around it
- Packaging, including the box, the board, the ribbon, the bag
- Delivery costs you absorb
- Fees and taxes. Work out what actually lands in your bank, not what the customer pays. See Why is my payout less than my price?
- Your margin. This is a business
Then look outward
Check what comparable sellers charge in your city, for the same weight and the same quality. Not the cheapest you can find, the ones making what you make.
If you are GST registered
Be clear with yourself about whether the price you type is before or after GST, because the customer pays GST on top of your product price where the product is taxable. The GST you receive is not revenue, it is money you hold until your return is due.
Sellers on ECO enrolment do not charge GST, so what you type is what the customer pays. See Why is my payout different from the price I set?
The one that catches people
Price every size and variant correctly. It is easy to set the 500 g price carefully and then guess at the 1 kg. A customer ordering the 1 kg at a guessed price is an order you lose money on, every time, for as long as the listing is up.
On raising prices later
You can change prices whenever you like, and the new price applies to new orders only. Raising a price does not usually cost you customers. Being unable to make the food sustainably does.
