Do I need a GSTIN to sell on Cakesify?
You can sell either as a GST registered seller or as an eligible unregistered seller under ECO enrolment. One or the other is required. There is no third option.
The two routes
| GST registered | ECO enrolment | |
|---|---|---|
| GST registration | Yes | No |
| ECO enrolment | Not needed | Required |
| GST charged on the product | Yes, where taxable | No |
| Invoice you issue | With GST | Without GST |
| TCS deducted | 0.5% of product value | None |
| GST on our commission | Applies | Applies |
You end up in the same place
This surprises people, so here it is on a ₹1,000 sale with a ₹100 commission.
Registered: ₹1,000 + ₹180 GST − ₹5 TCS − ₹118 commission and its GST = ₹1,057 reaches you. You then remit ₹180 GST, with the ₹5 TCS already credited to your cash ledger. You keep about ₹882.
ECO enrolment: ₹1,000 − ₹118 commission and its GST = ₹882 reaches you, with nothing to remit.
The same ₹882 either way. If anyone tells you one route earns more, the arithmetic above is the answer.
What actually differs
Where you can sell. The unregistered route is subject to conditions, including turnover limits and a restriction on inter-State supply of goods. If you want to sell outside your state, that usually means registering. See Can I sell outside my city or state?
Cash flow. Registered sellers receive the GST and hold it until their return is due. That is money in your account that is not yours, and treating it as income is how people end up short at filing time.
Paperwork. Registration means returns, every period, forever. Enrolment is lighter.
Input credit. If you are registered, the GST on our commission may be claimable as input credit. Ask your accountant.
Which should you choose?
That depends on your turnover, where you want to sell, and your wider tax position. It is a genuinely individual question and the wrong answer in either direction costs money.
Talk to an accountant. We can tell you how the platform treats each route. We cannot tell you which one is right for your business, and we are not qualified to.
Keeping it current
If you register for GST later, update your details straight away. Your deductions change from that point. See Updating your verification details.
